  1. 1778-1829. English chemist. As a laboratory 
  2. assistant in Bristol in 1799, he discovered 
  3. the respiratory effects of laughing gas 
  4. (nitrous oxide). He discovered, by 
  5. electrolysis, the elements sodium, potassium, 
  6. calcium, magnesium, strontium, and barium. He 
  7. invented the `safety lamp' for use in mines 
  8. where methane was present, enabling the 
  9. miners to work in previously unsafe 
  10. conditions. In 1802 he became professor at 
  11. the Royal Institution, London. He was elected 
  12. President of the Royal Society in 1820.
